NIN front man Trent Reznor has made it clear in the past that he pretty much hates the music industry as it currently stands, and that music sharing and online distribution is really the wave of the future for the biz. Well, now Reznor fans are going to benefit from this way of thinking because NIN’s latest album called “Ghosts I-IV” has been released online containing is a 36 tracks of industrial instrumental goodness for only five dollars a shot. Or, if you just want a sampler, they are also offering the first 9 tracks totally free. Head over to the official “Ghosts” site here for more info, or preview a few tracks below to see what its all about.

“Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.”

Trent Reznor explains, “I’ve been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn’t have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I’m very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts.”

Last.FM defined the “social music revolution” when they launched several years ago with hopes of becoming the world’s largest social music platform. After being acquired by NBC last year, I was unsure what was going to happen to such a great site and service. Who would have thought that it would get even better by providing the ability to play full-length tracks and entire albums free of charge. Read the entire article from the official Last.FM blog below.

“Something we’ve wanted for years—for people who visit Last.fm to be able to play any track for free—is now possible. With the support of the folks behind EMI, Sony BMG, Universal and Warner—and the artists they work with—plus thousands of independent artists and labels, we’ve made the biggest legal collection of music available to play online for free, the way we believe it should be.

Full-length tracks are now available in the US, UK, and Germany, and we’re hard at work broadening our coverage into other countries. During this initial public beta period, each track can be played up to 3 times for free before a notice appears telling you about our upcoming subscription service. The soon-to-be announced subscription service will give you unlimited plays and some other useful things. We’re also working on bringing full-length tracks to the desktop client and beyond.

Free full-length tracks are obviously great news for listeners, but also great for artists and labels, who get paid every time someone streams a song. Music on Last.fm is perpetually monetized. This is good because artists get paid based on how popular a song is with their fans, instead of a fixed amount.

We will be paying artists directly.

We already have licenses with the various royalty collection societies, but now unsigned artists can put their music on Last.fm and be paid directly for every song played. This helps to level the playing-field—now you can make music, upload it to Last.fm and earn money for each play. If you make music, you can sign up to participate for free.

We’re not printing money to pay for this—but the business model is simple enough: we are paying artists and labels a share of advertising revenue from the website.

Today we’re redesigning the music economy. There are already millions of tracks available, and we’re adding more every day. We will continue to work hard to bring this to everyone in the world.”

Maybe I’ve been living under a rock, because I have never heard of the “Black Cab Sessions” before today. But when I got word that The Kooks jammed a new song freestyle in the back of a cab I had to give it a look.

“A challenge has been laid down. Forget chart positions, forget ticket sales, or brand-extending toiletries or myspace friends or any other measure of success. From here on in, it’s all about how well you can rock in the back of a cab.”

“The Sessions are all about great music and the venue strips this to its essence. We aren’t picky about genre and will happily open the cab door to anyone who blows us away”

R.E.M. is putting the finishing touches on their new album now entitled “Accelerate” due for an April 1st 2008 release. Partially recorded in Vancouver and Dublin with Bloc Party/Snow Patrol producer Jacknife Lee, “Accelerate” will be R.E.M.’s 14th studio album. According to NME, “Confirmed tracks for the album include ‘Until The Day Is Done’, ‘Living Well Is The Best Revenge’, ‘Mr Richards’, ‘Staring Down The Barrel Of Middle Distance’, and ‘I’m Gonna DJ’, a regular in the band’s set on their 2004/2005 world tour. Frontman Michael Stipe said the guitar-driven LP is “the fastest we’ve made in 20 years”.

He told Q: “I think the songs on ‘Around The Sun’ are great, but in the process of recording we lost our focus as a band. Now, that focus is back. And it’s razor sharp.”

For more R.E.M. goodness you should also head over to Ninety Nights which will be streaming a new 30-60 second short video for… well… ninety nights leading up to the release of “Accelerate”. The video’s are a bit off the wall right now, but my hunch is that it will all make sense by April 1st. Each video can also be downloaded in HD for the duration of the day in which it was released.

TheSixtyOne.com “brought to you free-of-charge by two guys who quit their jobs to give musicians and listeners a fair shake”, is a new site dedicated to bring musicians and music lovers a place to be discovered and discover alike. TheSixtyOne.com features a Digg-like interface that allows musicians to post their songs after which users can listen and rate the music. Songs that get the most votes eventually show up on the front page of the site for maximum exposure. Songs that you really enjoy can be added to your account collection (once you have registered for a free account).

Once registered, there is a point system that comes into play as well which makes things even more interesting. You use points to vote for songs you like, but if that songs gets popular, you make even more points. Listen to music on “The Rack” (tracks that haven’t made it to the front page) and you earn free points as well. The more points you have, the more you can interact with the site. Earning points also gives you a higher user rating.

You will find a bit of everything (music wise) on TheSixtyOne.com from alternative to hip-hop which makes the site addicting to simply browse, listen and rate music you have never heard before. If you don’t know what to listen to, just click “The Radio” for a random mix music. This site is the definition of “social music” and the potential for TheSixtyOne.com to go BIG is very real. Check it out for yourself here.

Louis XIV has been laying low for a few years after their sophomore effort “The Best Little Secrets Are Kept”, but now they are back in the mix with an entirely new album called “Slick Dogs and Ponies” which is due for a January 29th release. In typical Louis XIV fashion, “Guilt By Association” is the first single from the new album which is being distributed free of charge all over the web.

Their latest press release explains that the new album “explores new sonic terrain with a lush, grandiose collection that includes string arrangements by world renowned composer David Campbell that makes up for a record that demonstrates a devotion to artistic growth, blending classical sensibility with their rock and roll roots.”

The AmazonMp3 music store launched back in September to above average reviews and a very decent library of more than 2 million songs. And now the service just got a little bit better with the addition of Warner Music Group. Starting this week, most of WMG’s digital audio assets will be available on AmazonMp3, DRM free of course just like everything else on AmazonMp3. Warner Music Group holds several very popular labels including Atlantic, Rhino Records, Warner Brothers Records and Bad Boy Records just to name a few. But if aren’t familiar with, or just haven’t had a chance to use the AmazonMp3 music store, I would highly recommend giving it a try. Go ahead, iTunes wont mind. In fact, songs are cheaper on Amazon, they are all in Mp3/DRM free format, the service is very easy to use, and if you just can’t break things off with iTunes, you can import anything you have downloaded from Amazon to iTunes and distribute the music to as many machines or devices as you want.

Oasis is back in the studio laying down tracks for their seventh full length album according to Spinner.com who recently interviewed front man Liam Gallagher. “We’ve got like 8 songs wrote. I think they’re f***ing great,” Liam told Spinner. “We’ve just gotta make sure we write the right record and so we’re sort of just picking at these songs and sort of amplifying them a bit more. We’ve got off to a good start. There’s not one acoustic song on it — it’s all f***ing rocking.” Hopefully this time around Liam and brother Noel Gallagher can put their differences aside long enough to make it happen. Judging by Spinner’s interview, everything is running smooth and looking good for a 2008 release. Oasis’ last album “Don’t Believe the Truth” produced by Dave Sardy was released in 2005 and according to Liam, the band is standing by Dave to help them with this album as well. “He’s top man. I like him,” Liam said of the producer. “We’re all on the same page. We’re all having a laugh and it’s going really easy. We’re not having any struggle with any sounds or anything. Touch wood it remains like that.” Head over to Spinner.com for the full article.

If you are looking for a little distraction during your day, Songza.com is the site for you. Songza is the concept of 23-year-old Aza Raskin to bring virtually any song to your fingertips. Songza allows users to search, play, share, rate and much more for an insane amount of music. The interface is as simple as they come with a search field and submit button. Once you find what you are looking for, simply click it for more options. Aza Raskin states “I am proud to announce the release of Songza, a music search engine and Internet jukebox. Songza solves the related problems of “I want to hear a song” and “I want to share a song with a friend.” Released on November 8, its popularity is growing rapidly: We’re poised to reach one million songs played within just a week of launching Songza.

Songza is also an interface showcase. I’ve used the interface principles discussed here on the Humanized blog to design Songza to be humane, slick, and viral. Play with the interface for a bit, and you’ll find habituatable pie-menus instead of slow linear menus; an inviting design that uses only two icons, both of which act as illustrations for words; an incredibly high density of content and a correspondingly low amount of interaction; undo instead of warnings; and transparent messages that don’t break your train of thought.

Ironically, there’s a lot that went into making Songza so simply. Achieving such a high level of simplification required a lot of code, in part because we couldn’t just use standard widgets. It was worth it, though. You can’t be better without being different — I think Songza is both.”

Way back in 98 Jay-Z dropped “Hard Knock Life” which immediately jumped the charts and got him nominated for his first Grammy. Nearly 10 years, 6 Grammy’s and 9 number one albums later, Jay-Z has another hit on his hands. “American Gangster” (loosly tied to the movie) released under Def Jam Records makes Jay-Z’s 10th album at the top of the US album charts according to Billboard.com. Elvis Presley is probably turning in his grave as we speak because he is now tied at second place with Jay-Z for the most number one albums on the chart right under The Beatles with a massive 19 #1 albums. Check out “Blue Magic” from “American Gangster” streaming below which is also our Mp3 of the Week.

Just when you thought they were broken up for good… yet again, Weezer fans can rejoice with the confirmation that “Album Six” is on its way for an April 2008 release. Last month, bassist Scott Shriner released the following statement on Weezer’s official site: “We’ve finished. Album 6 is getting ready for mixing and I have never been so excited about a project in my life. Weezer fans truly have something to look forward to. The entire band has accomplished some of its most challenging goals as a group and as individuals. It’s all coming together on this album. To sum it up, at the beginning of the recording each member asked himself “what do you want out of this session?” The answer lies ahead.”

On the official “Album Six” website, you will also find the release date for another album simply titled “Alone”: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo,’ which is due out on December 18th. Rivers says “This is a CD of my favorite home demos from ’92 to ’07 featuring a lot of never heard before songs, a few covers, a few songs from my unfinished rock musical “Songs From The Black Hole” and my original demo for “Buddy Holly””.

Lou Reed is back in action with none other than The Killers of all bands. “Tranquilize” is the first single to be released on their new forth coming album called Sawdust. The majority of tracks on this new album will be comprised of b sides, remixes, cover songs and soundtrack singles but “Tranquilize” stands to be the first previously unreleased original track featuring guest vocals from Lou Reed. Tranquilize is a classic example of why some bands should stick to what they are good at. That’s not to say that this is a horrible track, but it’s definitely not up to par with what the Killers have shown they can do in the past. In short, the entire track is a bit half assed and repetitive from a musical and lyrical standpoint. Despite this mess of a single, I still have some hope for the rest the new album and it will be especially interesting to see how the Killers interpret several covers including songs from Joy Division, Dire Straits and many more. Check out the “Tranquilize” music video featuring Lou Reed here.

Publishers are finally starting to realize that they need to embrace this so called “digital age” instead of fighting it. The idea of providing a magazine in digital format is not a new concept by any means, and it amazes me that publications such as Rolling Stone have taken this long to make the leap. Seriously… companies such as Zinio.com have provided a digital solution for magazine distribution and consumption since 2001, but only with mild success. The problem is, in my opinion, that everyone including publishers and digital distributors such as Zinio are still so wrapped up with the “DRM” concept that they can’t come up with a business model that works well for everyone.

Anyway, the news here is that Rolling Stone is in fact providing their entire magazine, digital, and free of charge at RollingStone.com (sponsored by LG). This is a small step forward in the right direction, but the method in which they have implemented it “SUCKS” in a big way for the reader. RS has chosen to distribute their mag using a very clunky 1990’s style flash based reader. There is so much zooming and panning involved that it’s hard to stick with it for more than a few pages.

Either way, I give kudos to Rolling Stone for jumping on the bandwagon, but the end result needs major improvement. Plus, with popularity of web enabled, wide screen mobile devices increasing substantially, this effort might just be “too little too late”. It is apparently clear that consumers want all their digital content to be mobile and available on one single device. I think it’s only a matter of time that you will be able to get full blown magazines right on your iPod directly from programs such as iTunes.

This week’s Mp3 of the week is “Falling Down“, which is the first single from the new album. This is classic Duran Duran from head to toe and even though the song was co-written by Timberlake and Timbaland, you “fortunately” can’t really tell the difference. Check out the 7 minute “Falling Down” music video here or click play below to preview the Mp3 single.

SpiralFrog.com launched their ad supported music download service last month with mixed reviews, but today they gain a little respect by signing with Sony ATV Music Publishing which will expand their library of quality, free and legal online music.

“Sony ATV is aggressively moving to create new digital revenue streams for our song writers,” said Martin N. Bandier, chairman and CEO, Sony ATV Music Publishing. “SpiralFrog has created a new opportunity to monetize an untapped market by offering a compelling alternative to illicit file sharing sites.”

But as more bands realize the potential to monetize and make a profit without the need of a major label, it seems that SpiralFrog’s distribution model might be “too little too late”. Radiohead has already made more than 10 mill in donations for their latest album “In Rainbows” released “label free” only a few weeks ago. If Radiohead were still signed, about 9 million of that profit would go directly to their label just to put things in perspective. Either way, SpiralFrog.com should be recognized for thinking out of the box and providing a DRM free solution to music distribution.

Nada Surf will be releasing their new record “LUCKY” in February of 2008 , but you don’t have to wait that long to hear “See These Bones” (streaming below) which is the first single from the new album. “LUCKY is Nada Surf’s fifth record and third for Seattle indie Barsuk Records, following the successful and critically lauded “Let Go” (2003) and “The Weight is a Gift” (2005). The band lineup for almost 12 years has been and still is Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar), Daniel Lorca (bass) and Ira Elliot (drums). The record is filled with songs of restlessness, longing and the elusiveness of love. Yet, in its inimitable way, the band beautifully counterbalances its signature lyrical wistfulness with its singular musical buoyancy. Intimate tunes become we’re-all-in-this-together anthems, thanks to the chiming guitars, propulsive beat, and the ever-present yearning in Caws’ voice.”

Let’s kick off a new segment on MassivePress.com called “Mp3 of the Week” where we will post and review one stand out new track once a week for your listening pleasure. This week, we’re pulling a song from the new Band of Horses album called “Is There A Ghost”. You may have heard of them, but my guess is that you probably haven’t which is a shame if you like simple goodness. Band of Horses is another one of those Seattle (my home town) bands that started their career with an album called “Everything All The Time” which featured one of those songs (The Funeral) that you can’t wait to hear again and again on the radio. This week, they have a new album and another one of those songs. “Is There A Ghost” has an escalating energy to it that will hook you in within the first few chords, but leaves you hanging by the end of 3 minutes wanting something more. Problem is, that “something more” never comes. The band is Band of Horses and the new album is called “Cease to Begin”. Click the play button below to sample “Is There A Ghost” from their new album.
